Sarvagunn Sampanna will raise questions related to culture-Ekta Kapoor

Ekta Kapoor, the Czarina of Television is back with an array of new fiction shows, of which the first in the line is the tale of Swara, a Lavni based dancer who possesses all the good qualities that a perfect bride can have, but still faces problems from the society who refuse to look beyond her art form and accept her to be Sarvagunn Sampanna.

Here is Ekta Kapoor as she talks of her new Imagine show, Sarvagunn Sampanna.

What was the idea behind the concept of Sarvagunn Sampanna?
Actually I was looking for a concept that has a background which is culturally rich, at the same time talks of certain disrespectful attributes prevalent in the society. Basically I was looking for a show based on background versus character, like the recent Marathi movie 'Natrang'. The entire credit for this concept of Lavani goes to my Creative Head Prashant Bhatt.

This is your second show after Pavitra Rishta based on Marathi cultural background, so what's your take on it?
Yes, Pavitra Rishta is doing good. So I thought of another project based on the same base. I feel Maharashtra is a state which has so much lifestyle variation within one culture. For instance lifestyle of a middle class in all respects differs from that person living in a village, so this is an attempt to portray the life of a rural cultural family.

Along with the ongoing shows, you have so many new shows lined up. How do you look at it?
I would say that leaves me with no time to exercise (smiles).

So how do you plan to strategize the different concepts of your upcoming shows?
See that is what needs to be worked out now. I'm planning to space out all the serials systematically, so that no serial feels left out at any point of time. We work for the audience with full dedication, so don't want the purpose to be defeated.

What do you think would be the USP of Sarvagunn Sampanna?
I feel Sarvagunn Sampanna will raise those questions which have never been raised by a layman suffering the trauma as this. Even today dance as an art form is looked down in some parts of the country, so this serial would raise such questions attached to the culture and will also try to detach the individual personality of a person from his/her background.

So the message and USP of the show would be to inculcate questions related to the concept of a perfect bride in society.

Why did you choose Pooja Bose as your lead again?
Basically we were looking for a face that has some facial structure resembling to those belonging to that particular cultural belt. We auditioned thousands of people for the same but then when Pooja came in for the look test, we found her perfect for the role. Above all, she is a Bharatnatyam dancer, so it gets easier for her to pick the Lavani form of dance faster.

D.J’s Toh Baat Hamari Pakki Hai on Sony!

D. J Creative’s upcoming show ‘Toh Baat Hamari Pakki Hai’ is gearing to launch on Sony TV and is elbowing its place in prime-time slot of the channel. The show is all about the two protagonists coming from a very traditional families; families which believe in arranged marriages.

A source informs, “The show will revolve around two protagonists and their families. The male lead essayed by Barun Sobti (lastly seen in Dill Mil Gayye) is a very cool, lazy, easy going and irresponsible person whereas the female lead essayed by Ankita (Ratna of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo) is shown as very sweet, caring, responsible person. Thus, the show is all how these two people will come together, being a unlike pair and manage to be together. As we mentioned earlier, the two family families firmly believe in ‘arranged’ marriage, the drama will move further as they fix the marriage with those two people who are quite unlike each other.”

“The initial shoots for the show are going on in the scenic Mussoorie (North India) as the families will be shown as Mussoorie residents. Later on the crew will come back to Mumbai for the regular shoots. Apart from the protagonists, the actors like Sai Deodhar, Himani Shivpuri, Vievk Mushran, Mona Ambegaonkar, Aditi Shriwaikar, Mihika Verma will be seen in prominent roles. The show will be a daily and is ready to grab the primetime slot on the channel. The show might launch till end of April or early May,” adds the source.

Well, get ready to experience one more family drama on Sony TV!

Upcoming Fiction shows in 2010

For the couch potato 2010 is sure to be a roller coaster ride with an entertaining line up of television programming all set to hit the sets. Along with the social dramas that are a hit nowadays, mythology, family fights and love tiffs are also in the race for the big, bad TRP battle.

Let’s take a quick peek into the upcoming schedule.

‘Kalki’ is Smita Thackeray’s ambitious show having Ashutosh Rana in lead while it has been rumoured that Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff had been approached for significant roles. It’s said to be mythological story about lord Vishnu’s 10 avatars. ‘Devi’ will air on NDTV Imagine which will have story of a girl-child who is considered as a goddess as her birth brings rains in the village after a long drought.

‘Do Saheliya’, which obviously is about two friends will mark Sudha Chandran’s comeback. JD Majethia’s untitled show once again brings a family drama which revolves around lives of four sisters. In competition is Asit Modi’s untitled show as he also brings a serious family drama.

Audience will be in splits as SAB TV comes up with a silent comedy ala Charlie Chaplin movies. NDTV’s funny Family show ‘Ghar Ki Baat Hai 2’ will tickle audience’s funny bone.

There are different genre shows coming up this year that may be breathers for audience from same old stuff like YRF’s ‘Seven’ a sci-fi fiction, ‘Powder’ a thriller chase drama based on underworld crime stories. Ekta Kapoor’s detective show will be competing with ‘Crime Patrol’ that returns back after long break for its second season and with similar themed show from the production house of Red Chillies.

Romance will also show its magic this year as shows like ‘Do Hanso Ka Joda’ and ‘Paheli’ are love stories with a difference which will compete to gain audience attention. YRF’s ‘Rishta.Com’ has two partners of a matchmaking company falling in love while ‘Mahi Way’ is the story of a cute, fat girl who doesn’t believe that being fat will obstruct her from meeting her dream boy and will mark Sharon Prabakar’s TV debut.

Social Dramas will also be seen on TV with ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ having Rajesh Kumar playing lead role of fat man with some obsessions and ‘Traffic Signal’ where three different women share their life experiences will be aired. ‘Visarjan’ on ‘Colors’ has the story of a village girl marrying a rich old guy to protect her identity will also compete in this category.

Seems like 2010 will be a treat with numerous kind of shows coming up and all set to impress viewers and gain viewership. So, viewers get set to watch the drama, romance, reality, comedy and let the begin!

What’s the end of Mahi’s Way?

Mahi Way, one of the five new shows launched by YRF TV on Sony TV, is the story of girl who is slightly on the heavier side. The promos give the idea that she believes in herself irrespective of the society's thoughts.

However, the latest reports suggest that, the lead actress Pushtiie will be transformed by the end of the show into an average sized girl.

According to our source, "The show Mahi Way is a sort of autobiography of its writer Devika Bhagat. She weighed ninety kilograms in her early teens and worked on losing it once she turned eighteen. So Mahi will be shown unaffected by people's comments about her flab for the initial phase. But there will be a point where she will on her own decide to get rid of her unhealthy diet and lazy attitude."

The source adds, "The show will give a deja vu of one of Sony's older shows Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, in which the geeky girl turns gorgeous and has a happy ending with her prince charming."

We spoke to the writer Devika Bhagat who says, "Yes it's true that I once weighted 90 kilos. Once I turned eighteen, the realization hit me that you can't continue to be fat. When I was fat, I used humor as a defense mechanism and that made me the typical 'funny fat girl'. What I didn't realize was that it also put me across as stupid and boring. No one took me seriously. So eventually I decided to change for the better!"

Devika adds, "The show is very close to me as it is in a way my memoir. Many incidents shown in Mahi way have happened in my real life."

So does that mean the character Mahi will follow suit and lose weight too, just in the way you have? To this Devika cheekily replies, "A very sneaky question, I have to say. But for that you'll have to watch the show."

Pushtiie aka Mahi apparently always knew in spite of her size she will be a lead actress one day. She says, "Yes, I always knew I'll be a lead actress. I felt it from inside." So did she put on weight for the role? "Nope. I've always been this way. In fact I lost some of my weight after I started working."

We wonder if this loss of weight continues until she becomes trim like writer Devika…

COLORS back to all-fiction at prime time...

After their successful back-to-back non fiction shows in Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss Season 3, COLORS is launching two new fiction shows in the time slots between 9-10 PM.

While Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam, produced by Creative Eye will be the channel's first love story, Laagi Tujhse Lagan, produced by Playtime Creations is the story of a girl Nakusha from a lower caste who is forced to live her life with distorted beauty.

As Ashwini Yardi, Programming Head, COLORS puts it, "We have always wanted to produce shows that are a reflection of the society. We have also wanted to do a love story, and with Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam, we bring to the audience a love story happening between an upper caste boy and lower caste girl. So as we see in the promo, we bring to notice the manner in which the society reacts, even when a love story is not even in its budding stage".

"We have got our two good looking leads in Gaurav Khanna and Yami Gautam. Gaurav has proved good for COLORS, as he was our lead in Jeevan Saathi too. He comes with his own baggage of fan following, he is a localite too hailing from Kanpur. He is also a fresh face who will grow as our story unfolds", adds Ashwini.

On the other show Laagi Tujhse Lagan, Ashwini Yardi tells us, "This is a very unique story of a girl Nakusha who lives in a slum area in Mumbai. This again has a social message to spread and talks about the life of the people who are forced to be content with very less in life. This again will unfold into a very nice refreshing love story".

Remind her that their earlier fiction slots Jeevan Saathi and Meri Ghar Aayi Ek Nanhi Pari at the same 9-10 PM slot did not do that well for the channel, and she gives us a very optimistic reply in, "Yes, it is true that those shows did not deliver as much as we expected. But the very fact that we are launching these shows after the successful run of two reality shows at the same time slot is a positive in itself. Also we are looking forward to gaining more viewership from the younger lot who witnessed the reality shows aired at this time".

Lastly, Ashwini Yardi informed us that, "The two shows will be launching on December 28th. Yeh Pyaar Na Hoga Kam will take the 9 PM slot while Laagi Tujhse Lagan will be at the 9.30 PM slot".

Jasveer Kaur to play Monica Bedi on screen

Jasveer KaurJasveer Kaur popularly known as Pavitra of ‘Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan’, has taken a break from regular saas bahu dailies as they were getting too monotonous for her. Now she is busy doing short story serials which will feature her in episodes.

“I’m doing two series on Zoom channel. One is based on Bollywood and Crime while the other one is also based on reality. It’s very interesting and I am enjoying this,” states Jasveer.

In ‘Bollywood and Crime’ she is paired opposite Kelly Dorjee (ex boyfriend of Lara Dutta). “This story is based on the underworld connection with the film industry. I will be essaying the role of Monica Bedi while Kelly will be portrayed as Abu Salem in the series,” she adds further.

“The other series is called ‘Punaah’, which also has an interesting story line which focuses on a man who doesn’t believe in God. There will be situations where he will soon realise what happens due to his disbelief in the almighty,” she says.

‘Punaah’ sees Ranvir Shorey paired opposite Jasveer. “The only reason for not taking dailies is that all the offers I was getting were for negative roles which I don’t want to do. Thus, this will be a good break for me,” concludes the actress.

All I can tell you is that I play the mediator between the contestant and the doctor, Trupti Jayin. I will ask the person about his/her problems, and then lead them to the doctor, who will start with the meditation course. After this is done, I will try to make the person feel good".

As we had earlier reported that Renuka Shahane had almost been finalized to play the wife of the elder Abhimanyu Singh aka Shahrukh Khan in the show. However, the latest is that Shruti Ulfat has bagged the coveted role, opposite the Badshah.

Confirming this to us, Shruti Ulfat says, "Yes, I play Dr. Madhu Rai who is the wife of the elder Abhimanyu Singh which is to be played by Shahrukh. I am looking forward to working with him (smiles). Pulkit Samrat will be playing our son, and is the lead of the show".

We tried calling Renuka Shahane, but she was unavailable.

Our attempts to get in touch with Bhavna Sresth, Creative Head, Red Chillies were in vain.

As reported earlier, Roopal Tyagi will play the parallel lead in the show. Ankeeta Bharrgava has also been finalized to play an important role. The female lead of the show has not been finalized, and is tipped to enter only after the first twenty episodes.

The show has already gone on floors, and is expected to launch after Bigg Boss ends, at a biweekly slot over the weekends.
